Background
The Meyer Levin Steel Orchestra Program is the newest component to the Performing Arts Department. Although the newest, it has been in existence for over 15 years and is one of the school’s iconic programs. It is one of the things that make us unique and stand out from all other performing arts programs in schools throughout the city. Along with teaching the students about the origins and the composition of the steel pan instrument, the program also explores and exposes the students to a wide variety of musical genres. As a part of the percussion family, playing the instrument help students develop great hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. The Steel Orchestra program has been a very integral part of the school’s culture since its inception, representing the school at various events throughout New York City.
